People starting a career in English Language Teaching You may be considering making a career in English Language Teaching and view the CELTA as an entry into a good teaching position; or you may be a recent graduate wanting a qualification that provides a sound basis in the fundamentals of language teaching practice and gives you the confidence to take control in the classroom.
Those teaching English in Korea without formal qualifications The CELTA can also be a useful qualification for teachers – both native and non-native speakers - who have been teaching here for some time but have little previous formal training in TESOL. The CELTA course will sharpen your teaching practice, confirm your ability, and may even lead to internal promotion or a better teaching job.
Those currently teaching children Dealing with adults requires a different skill-set to that needed for younger learners. By adults we mean here students aged 16+ (though many of the principles and practices of the CELTA course can also be applied to middle-school situations). The CELTA course will enable you to observe adult classes in action and provide the kind of hands-on classroom practice necessary to make the transition to teaching older learners.
Those wishing to teach English outside Korea You may have been teaching English here in Korea but now wish to move to another country. You will generally find that outside Korea most organizations require a certification in TESOL as a prerequisite to employment, and many schools specifically ask for the Cambridge CELTA.
Those who already have an MA in TESOL Teachers with an MA in TESOL or Applied Linguistics also look to the course to provide the practical component so often lacking in a university-bound curriculum. Here the CELTA offers you an opportunity to make the connection between academic theory and classroom practice, get feedback on your technical skills and contribute to your personal development.
Those looking for a career change or career break Increasingly, CELTA candidates are professionals either looking for a new career opportunity or wanting a short break in their existing career. Many seek the exciting opportunities of living and working abroad. Whether you wish to teach English for the short or long term, CELTA gives you the training you need to help you adjust to a dynamic and challenging new profession. |

You can take CELTA full time (four weeks) or part time (over three months).
Your chosen course: - teaches you the principles of effective teaching - provides a range of practical skills for teaching English to adults learners - gives you hands-on teaching practice
There are five main units of learning: - Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context - Language analysis and awareness - Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing - Planning and resources for different contexts - Developing teaching skills and professionalism.
You will be assessed throughout the course, with no final examination. An external assessor appointed by Cambridge ESOL, moderates each course. There are two components of assessment:
Teaching practice You will teach for a total of six hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance at the end of the six hours. Classroom observation of CELTA and DELTA-qualified teachers is also a required component of the course.
Written assignments You will complete four written assignments: one focusing on adult learning; one on the language system of English; one on language skills; and one on classroom teaching.
To be awarded the certificate you must pass both components. |

2. Develop an initial understanding of the contexts within which adults learn English, their motivations and the roles of teacher and learner;
3. Develop familiarity with the principles and practice of effective teaching to adult learners of English;

5. Develop familiarity with appropriate resources and materials for use with adult learners of English for teaching, testing and for reference;
6. Identify opportunities for their own future development as professionals in the field.

Applicants should
¡Ü be at least 20 years old at the start of the course;
¡Ü have a standard of education which would allow entry to higher education in their own country;
¡Ü have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to follow the course. For non-native teachers this would mean an English level equivalent to at least IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL 550+, which means 80+ on the TOEFL iBT, or 215+ on the computer-based TOEFL. A Pass grade on The Cambridge ESOL Advanced or Proficiency English examinations would also be acceptable. All applicants also have to take part in a pre-course oral interview at the Institute. |

We run the CELTA course four times a year, two full-time 4-week intensive courses in January and July, and two part-time courses (three days a week) in spring and autumn.

Currently W2,150,000 - including an initial deposit of W500,000 to secure your place once you have been accepted. For the part-time course the balance of the fee is payable in installments as the course progresses. |
